Develop an
understanding of ocean freight
A popular means of transport used by
international traders is the sea route. If you are shipping goods by ocean
route, then you already must be aware of the pivotal role played by the ocean
freight. Numerous factors play an important role in the determination of ocean
freight. It is extremely important to develop an understanding of the way the sea
cargo rates are levied. If you fail to follow this step, then you may
end up crossing the budget which will pave the way for financial disaster. The
diverse factors which have an impact on the ocean freight are explored below.
• Destination point
While calculating ocean
freight rates the intended destination has to be taken into account. If you
take a peek at the website of Darkblueshipping.com, you will see that you will
have to incur sky-high sea cargo rates if the transportation route is longer
and vice versa.
• Imposition of
service charges
These freight rates are
also affected by the imposition of additional service charges which may be
security related by the port authorities.
• Specific season
The season plays a key role for particular
commodities. In the peak season, the rates of shipping are much higher. The
scarcity of containers resulting from high demand often causes a growing
concern among the international traders about the possibilities of interruption
in the supply chain.
• Role of currency
In the international world
of trading, the common denomination is a dollar. So the rate of exchange plays
a key role in the calculation of freight.
• Scope of penalties
The chances of penalties
arise when the shipment reaches the port way past the scheduled time. This kind
of situation may occur due to overcrowding and generally in these case fines
are being imposed.
• Terminal handling
charges
In addition to the sea
freight, be prepared to incur additional costs in the form of terminal handling
charges. The shipping companies levy those additional costs concerning the
unloading of consignment and then having to stack them properly below the
crane.
• Rising fuel prices
For storing the fuel,
bunkers are used. Even if you are transporting less quantity still you will
have to incur higher shipping rates and the continuously rising fuel prices
further will affect the freight rates.
Decision
making
More or less the freight rates on the
sea route are standardized. Be on the search for discounts offered by the
shipping companies to frequent shippers. It is a wise decision to develop a
positive relationship with the shipping companies. It is the professional
agencies who have outstanding interpersonal skills, and their negotiating
skills can help out in carving favorable deals.
